In this presentation, we will focus on two major things: a health promotion plan delivered to teenage girls at Lakewood high school. Two, we will look at the outcomes of the educational session, the attainment of the agreed-upon health goals, and an evaluation of the outcomes based on healthy people objectives and the progress towards meeting healthy people objectives. 

Health Promotion Plan

Teen pregnancy is a major public health concern. Over the last few decades, there has been a reduction in the overall number and rate of teen pregnancies and births. However, the rate is still high, and there are various disparities in health and teen pregnancy. Lakewood high school is one of the institutions that has recorded high teen pregnancy rates in the region, leading to school drop-out. Thus health promotion among the teen girls in the school was necessary. 

The educational sessions aimed at improving health and modifying behavior, thus preventing and reducing teen pregnancies. Identifying the risk factors and how teen pregnancy can be prevented in this population is essential. According to Kantor, Levitz, and Holstrom (2020), the use and availability of different birth control methods among adolescents have played an essential role in reducing teen pregnancy. It is also necessary to understand that the effects of teen pregnancy on health, education, and socioeconomic development will also be explored. 

Risk Factors for Teen Pregnancy

Various risk factors for teen pregnancy exist in the community. One of the most profound risk factors is being a victim of sexual abuse. Sexual abuse and assault victims are most likely to get pregnant early, especially when exposed to repeated abuse. The use of drugs such as alcohol, especially for high school students, is a risk factor since it may lead teens to risky sexual behaviors, which contribute to teen pregnancy. Additionally, more girls begin to engage in sexual activity early, raising their risk for teen pregnancy. Research shows that a lack of sex education also places young girls at a higher risk for teen pregnancy (Paredes &Santa-Cruz-Espinoza, 2020). Another risk factor is social pressure and being brought up in a home with frequent family conflicts.         

Preventing Preventable Causes of Teen Pregnancy

Efforts to prevent teen pregnancy at the individual level are essential. It is part of your reproductive right, and taking charge of it is crucial. Evidence-based strategies for preventing teen pregnancy include abstinence and being clear on your sexual values and attitudes. These are the two major strategies and the safest since, apart from teen pregnancy, they prevent you from sexually transmitted diseases and have zero risk of pregnancy.

Additionally, it is crucial to engage in youth social development programs where sex education and reproductive health are taught; thus, keep your mind busy and understand the importance of not engaging in sex at an early age. According to Garney et al. (2019), pornography and access to pornographic sites corrupt adolescents’ minds, leading them to try to exercise what they see, thus leading to pregnancy. Therefore, avoiding pornography is one way of preventing teen pregnancy. For those who are sexually active, it is important to get sex and contraceptive counseling to improve your knowledge of contraceptives and their use, thus preventing pregnancy.         

The Use/Availability of Contraceptives

The use of birth control methods among adolescents has been seen to be one of the strategies that have considerably helped reduce the rate of teen pregnancy and births over the last few years. In this era, initial sexual activity age has decreased drastically, placing girls at a higher risk for teen pregnancies. Most girls become sexually active in high school, and many see it as normal. Therefore, the availability and knowledge of contraception are essential. According to Kantor et al. (2020), contraception should be included in sex education to facilitate teen pregnancy prevention in teens who are already sexually active. Contraceptives and contraception counseling are available, especially offered by family health practitioners. However, the issue is stigmatized since many people believe that the use and availability of contraceptives among teens promote sexual activity. Thus it is better to use other methods, such as abstinence and having a strong value base and attitude toward sex at an early age.

Effects of Teen Pregnancy on Teens’ Health, Education, and Socioeconomic Development

Teen pregnancies adversely affect teens’ health, education, and socioeconomic development. According to the World Health Organization (2022), pregnant teens are exposed to higher risks during pregnancy, including eclampsia, puerperal endometriosis, and systemic infections. Additionally, teen births may lead to low birth weight, preterm births, and severe neonatal conditions. Mental health conditions such as anxiety and excess fatigue are common among teen mothers. Furthermore, due to stigmatization, teens cannot complete and attain higher education. Research shows that teen pregnancy contributes to poor academic performance and school attendance (Nkosi & Pretorius, 2019). Teen pregnancy also leads to poor socioeconomic development due to deprivation of education and employment.

Educational Session Expected Outcomes

The high school girls identified the expected outcomes of the educational session, and the outcomes were agreed upon in collaboration with the care provider. Mutual agreement on goals and expected outcomes helped improve the relevance of the health promotion program since the girls identified the areas they would want to be covered, including the areas that required more information. The expected session outcomes at the end of the program included increasing knowledge of teen pregnancy, awareness of contraception, and a reduction in the number of teens actively putting effort into preventing pregnancy, abortions, and teen pregnancy rates.

Healthy People 2030 Objectives/Leading Health Indicators

Healthy people 2030 has put in place goals and objectives indicating proper health for teens regarding teen pregnancies. The goal is to reduce adolescent pregnancies by improving pregnancy planning and preventing unintended pregnancies(Healthy People 2030.gov, n.d.) The goal is set to be achieved through certain objectives, including reducing adolescent pregnancies and the proportion of unintended pregnancies. Other objectives include increasing the proportion of adolescents who get formal sex education, adolescents who have never had sex, and females who use birth control.          

Evaluation of educational session outcomes against Healthy People 2030 objectives

The educational session outcomes have partially met the Healthy People 2030 objectives since progress has been seen in meeting some objectives. A reduction in the overall teen pregnancy rate has been recorded. Additionally, the number of unintended pregnancies among teens has reduced following abstinence and the use of contraception. There has also been an improvement in the number of females using contraceptives. Most importantly, the number of adolescents who have received formal sex education and abstained from sex before age 18 has steadily increased. All the objectives were not met, thus a need for improvement in future educational sessions.

Improving Future Educational Sessions

To ensure success in future health promotion educational sessions, the lessons learned from the previous session should be noted and incorporated into future sessions. Among the things that can be done to improve educational sessions in the future include reviewing sex education for minority teen populations. Some teens are socioeconomically deprived, thus unable to access education where formal sex education is offered. Emphasizing the importance of sex education in schools is necessary. The program only included girls, whereas teenage boys also contributed to teenage pregnancy; thus should be involved in future sessions. Participants’ feedback is also essential in improving relevance and participation in future education sessions.
